Mutual Change

We sat with our feet in the water

The sky was dreary

Yet the temperature was high.

His mouth moved.

But unexpected words poured out.

He spoke of his family

Of its brokenness

Of its messiness

Of its devastation.

It was his father's stern voice

It was his mother's independent cry.

And he was stuck in the middle.

Now he visioned himself

In his own house

In his own position of power

And, oh, he would do things different

He would be caring and loving

Compassionate but still stern

Authoritative but gracious

He would be the change he wish he had.

The wind blew and the rain dropped

And we looked at each other and ran

Separate ways

But together because he share a piece of himself

With me.
