My Brown Skinned Man

Caramel delight, delicious chocolate pecan, smooth as honey, brown skinned beauty There are so many words to define the color of your skin Let me begin to express the love that I have for my black man The moment he awakes from sleep, he is attentive at the task at hand Before he leaves for work, he takes his morning shower and shaves his beard He is so spontaneous, so serene, I can’t help but marvel at his perfection Standing in front of the mirror, he’ll brush his teeth until they are radiantly gleaming Stepping back, he’ll double check himself to make sure he is fresh and clean I can’t forget that alluring cologne that he sprays on making me weak all over He is one of a kind with a dashing close haircut and simply an eye catcher When he steps outside, he’ll take off to work in his sparkling car He knows how to hold it together when everything is falling apart He is so handsome and sharp, look at his stance, I can’t deny his flow He is courageous and charming wherever he goes His smile, oh that style, is so fly whenever he steps out I’m losing my vernacular in the sight of those striking eyes Wait, let me pause for a moment and get my thoughts back together The inner core of his heart is in sync with the outer existence of his superiority Standing before a large crowd, he knows how to deliver a seamless speech The boldness in his lucid languages is enough to make me fall deep into his reach He is muscled and chiseled, slim and compassionate, deep and challenging He stays searching for new ways to expand and market himself He is a brilliant burning flame in the mirrored moonlight shimmer He is intelligent, pure, and fearless He is persistent, determined, and full of hope He is always striving to be the best and grow He works long hours day by day and never complains He takes care of his family and sees them through life’s struggles and pain He is my brown skinned man strolling through society trying to make a difference

My name is Travis Green and I was born and raised in Middlesex, North Carolina. I grew up with my mom, Sandra Mitchener, and raised as a single child. My dad, Robert Lee Green, died in a car wreck when I was a baby. I graduated from North Carolina State University with a bachelor's degree in English in 2012. I'm also a visual artist who loves to draw pretty much anything in the world. I've been drawing for nearly 14 years. I recently published my poetry book, Life and Dreams in Poetic Words, and my autobiography, The Makings of Life and Dreams. My focus is to keep moving forward and chase after my dreams.
