My Choice
Confidence broken
Relationships lost
Feelings of regret
Frustration built
Implodes on me
Chilly day in December
Alone
Comfort in the darkness
Door creaks open and I jump
Your dad wants you
i hear her speak
screaming in my brain
i know exactly what this is
leave me alone
I can’t he’s demanding you go
he doesn’t control me
Talk to him yourself
My phone slips into my hand
no
Descending into despair
I call and fumble with phrases
Daughter you have no choice
don’t call me that
It’s my year
no it isn’t
I’m coming to get you Sunday
i refuse
No
The word stifles the air
Hands tremble with fear
Why
i don’t want to
Not a reason
none of your concern
Don’t hide
you wouldn’t let me
…
i am done suffering
get out
Fine. Bye.
Disconnection
sigh
Hours later
Poster ruffles and door opens
He’s not coming
good
I’m proud
what for
You have strength I don’t
…
Walls didn’t fall for you
They do for me
i’m not a child for him to control
I know
leave me alone please
Okay
Footsteps pad away
i look out the window
my reflection stares back
empowered
invigorated
myself
