My Dear Meghan

Dear Meghan,

To my littlest sister, much younger than I,

A birth later than any would expect.

But a decade difference is an extraordinary thing

And this one I do not object.

I sometimes sit up at night

And think about how I’d change

If you had never come into my life;

I must admit, that thought is strange.

I would not have been so strong in faith

I would have held anger towards God

For taking loved ones away from me…

Even writing this feels so odd.

My moral standing would probably differ

From the views I carry now.

Most of that comes from examples I set,

What you’d see from me, what I’d allow.

I’ve watched you grow since the sonograms,

A tiny baby you once were!

You came at the time our family needed you

Of this I am completely sure.

Our family had hit some hard times

With grandparents not faring well

When we lost mom’s dad, she fell into despair.

And how far she'd fall? Only time would tell.

Although our ties with others were shaken,

Our mother did not disappear.

She stayed strong as she has always done

And because she had you cooing in her ear.

She has said you kept her from becoming depressed,

And I believe this through and through.

For your happiness, joy, and singing voice

Kept joy in our hearts, we were rarely blue.

I worry about my future.

I regret things from my past.

But I know that I seem great to you,

And your support will always last.

So Megs, please don’t lose focus,

And think you aren’t worth the time.

You are the coolest kid to walk the earth.

Let’s face it; you’re a dime!

If you’re questioning your worth

And forget about who you are,

Just know that I’d do anything

For you, I’d go to Mars!

So sweet girl please never wonder

How differently we’d have lived our lives

Because without you we’d have been broken

And joy came when you arrived.

Love,

Maryssa
