My Dearest Friend

Hello again, my only friend

Have you come to say goodbye?

Nay, you’d whisper quietly;

How you love to watch me cry.

When days are long, you sing your song

And drag me down in thought

To a place that’s far more dark and cold;

A place I’ve never sought.

Is there a way to rid you, then?

I’ve tried so many a time,

But you never seem to take a hint—

You’re a dozen to my dime.

I like your twin much better, she

Is the pleasanter side of you.

But she lives to only please the world

Not a second more nor two.

Friend, your visits must be put to end.

I’m growing tired, see?

It’s awfully sad to think of you

So goodbye; no more with ‘we’

My Friend, my friend—

My only friend is me.
