My Escape
Writing has always been my escape.
On lonely nights while I'm lying awake.
It drowned out the screams from my poor mother
As dad was out back whipping my brother.
It helped me get past the abuse and the hate.
Immersed in writing, I forgot about the rape.
It got me through even the worst of times.
It let my mind wander thinking of rhymes.
It gave me courage when I was scared.
Even when I thought that nobody cared.
It allowed me to imagine a better life.
Of a father who loved his angel wife.
I no longer lived as the scared little girl.
Writing helped me understand my place in the world.
I hope, through words, to help everyone I can.
And not be ruined by that heartless man.
