To My Friend

To the friend

I only wanted to help.

This was the first time

I realized the truth could hurt

How could I sit there

And watch what you did

Without saying anything at all

You were hurting yourself

I saw it on your arms

The truth was out

I had to tell someone

I knew it was the right thing to do

But still I felt guilty

I anonymously spilled your secret

And then went back to class

As soon as I entered I heard the phone ring

The teacher answered it

She spotted you at your desk

She told you to go down to guidance

You had no idea

But I did

And I watched you leave the class

You didn’t come back for your stuff

I didn’t see you for the rest of the day

When you came back into school

I couldn’t ask how you were

Or if your parents were upset

Because you didn’t know it was me

I spilled your secret

And as your friend that killed me

But I hoped it helped

I write this letter

Never intending for it to be sent

Because I am afraid of how you would react

If you knew it was me.
