To My Future Daughter
Hello, dearest.
I’m writing this letter to you much, much before your arrival
Allow me to start from the beginning
You’ve opened your eyes to a whole, bright world in front of you
Everything you see is brand new
You become the center of my entire world
I loved everything about you, even the way your little toes curled
People will boast over your tiny hands and beautifully clear eyes
The hospital filled with your mini cries
You will begin to walk and stray too far
It feels like tomorrow you’ll drive away in your car
You learn to dance and sway
You begin to talk and say
“Mommy, look what I can do”
You look at everything with an innocent view
Your unwavering happiness entrances all around
Your laughter will forever be my favorite sound
Fast forward as you begin to grow
Your discovery of your favorite things starts to show
Your imagination takes shape
You find magic in this world that allows you to escape
You deal with your first conflict
And everything you thought begins to contradict
You’re confused, you wonder why
All I can do is comfort you and say don't cry
My darling, life will begin to get hard
Some things will happen that will make you raise your guard
You’ll meet a boy you think is your everything
And not understand when he says “it was just a fling”
You’ll cry as I hold you in my arms
This tears me apart, I hate seeing anyone bring you harm
You’ll move on and learn to say
“I’m worth more than that. He didn’t deserve me anyway”
We’ll have our arguments and fights here and there
But we’ll always resolve our differences and show that we care
You’ll move out and go to college
That’s the day I’ll never want to acknowledge
For I couldn’t be more proud of you, but I hate to see you leave
I cannot believe all my little girl has achieved
Now comes the day you bring home “the one”
I hope you’re right, I hope he treats you like the sun
You finally have everything you’ve hoped for
I can’t help but sit back and watch you soar
I love you with every fiber of my being, my dear child
And I remember each day we had together, especially the days we smiled
Now share this with your own daughter some day
I love you, I love you, I love you. Don’t ever let that fade away.
