My Gift
I have a gift
but no one seems to appreciate it.
I mean, I enjoy it–my loud voice echoes across a room
changes volume repeatedly
has little twists and turns in sound and emotion
and brightens the meaning of everything I have to say.
So I don’t really understand why people hate it so much–
there’s the snobby boy who thinks he’s all that rolling his eyes
or the quiet girl who quivers in fear when I come past
or the person who screams, “Oh God, you just broke my ear!” even though I clearly didn’t and it was a pointless remark but I say sorry anyway and continue with my loud ways.
But it gets more confusing–
Some people find amusement in my voice, like I was placed on earth for the sole reason to make them laugh
There’s the woman at the mall who overhears every word and chuckles quietly to herself
or the people who happily chime into my conversation acting like it’s no big deal because I’m so loud they think my speech must be for everyone
or the teacher who sits at their desk smirking as I continue to talk about nothing that has to do with school
or my friends, who laugh, or even cry, because my loud remark was just so strange and now everyone’s looking because obviously everyone heard.
But whatever,
Your looks might give me a little stab, or your fancy remarks that you think are so clever might punch me in the side
and the eye roll ... nah, that’s just pitiful.
But I don’t care–I’m keeping this loud voice
so sorry haters if my loudness is ringing in your ears
while you keep your little voice that no one hears.
