My Grandma's Hands

Your hands are soft

I remember the smell and feel of the lotion

You have used for as long as I can remember

Your hands are soft

But your determination to get work done is firm

Your hands are strong

I remember being woken up

By a gentle back rub before early school mornings

Your hands are strong

But you are powerless to hold a grudge

Your hands are small

I remember how easily they fit into mine

As we sing together on Sundays

Your hands are small

But you have the biggest heart of anyone I know

Your hands are scarred

I remember making mistakes as I cook with you

And learn to make your special recipes

Your hands are scarred

But your love for those around you is beautiful and whole

Your hands tell a story

I can remember a way they have

Held me

Taught me

Protected me

Led me

For every important moment of my life

Your hands are familiar to me as my own

And they will always be my guide
