My Granny
“Grandmothers are voices of the past and role models of the present. Gramdmothers open the doors to the future” stated Helen Ketchum. The sparkle in her crystal blue eyes not dulled by age, but by the ugly disease robbing her of the memories she had held so dear. She had lived on earth 29,850 days, 90 years, a mile stone. Asking her about this, she would say, “ I can’t be that old!” Love my Granny Ruth. Ruth Av Dukes born on the gulf and raised in Alabama was the youngest of her siblings and lost her father at a young age. Times were hard for her family especially through the Great Depression and was in high school during WW2. Im sure these events had alot to do with my Grannys beliefs and views of life! She married my great grandpa and old country boy in Tennessee. She left her family and the home she knew to move with PawPaw and start her own family. Granny Ruth had 7 children; she raised them believing in God, country, community, and loving each other plus your neighbor. Education was a top priority in her family; the teacher was always right and would listen to your point of view. She taught me respect, good behavior, and love of life. Many values that I shall pass on to my future children. The disease that took over her body did not destroy the love and respect I had and learned from my precious Granny Ruth. I will forever miss holding her hands and kissing her cheek but she will always motivate and inspire me to be my best self. I may not get to see her anymore but she will live forever in my heart. “I love you better Granny!”
