My Greatest Teacher

A little child into the world,

weak, meek, and unique

I open my eyes to say hello

To my life, to my world, to you

Your smile welcomes me

As if it is saying

“Thank you for being alive”

My first lesson was love

I couldn’t walk without your hand

I couldn’t talk without your words

I couldn’t sleep without your sound

I couldn’t eat without your train

Your smile encourages me

To do my many firsts

Holding my small body in your soft hands in reward

My second lesson was trust

I play with your jewelry

You play with my hair

We play with my dolls

We play with your makeup

I was a model

I was a fashion designer

I was a vet

I was a traveler

My third lesson was individuality

Before me is a nurse

Before me is a women

Before me is a mother

Before me is my mother

Whose been my greatest teacher

Throughout my life

With more lessons to share

My fourth lesson was thankfulness
