My Heart is a Coloring Book

My heart is a coloring book where the crayon is in the hands of a toddler.

But as the toddler’s legs becomes that of a child,

And as the child’s face thins out into that of a teenager’s,

And as the teenager’s thoughts begin to solidify into that of maturity,

The coloring of the crayon gets a little straighter,

And I can see pictures where before I only saw lines.

This heart of mine begins to remember all of the different shades of red and pink and purple.

It begins to add to its color palette,

And it slowly begins to form a collection.

In this hidden pocket of thoughts there is:

A broken mint,

Love others even if loving them makes you look foolish.

A used handkerchief,

I’ll never learn to let go of people because, once you enter my life, you will continue to matter, I will continue to love you, and my hope for you will never be lost.

A 2-sided coin,

The comparison game doesn’t give justice to how the beauty you possess was intentionally created by the hands of perfection.

A Bic lighter,

Maybe people do change, maybe your type of beautiful requires an effort that the people around you aren’t courageous enough to have, maybe we all have a purpose, maybe time is perfect, maybe addictions can be killed, maybe peace will come, maybe goodness exists right now, maybe families can love each other, maybe two people can fall in love and choose it for the rest of their lives, maybe sorrow is meaningful, maybe there is a God, maybe He does care, maybe there is a path to follow that leads to freedom, and maybe hope can be found even when all the lights are turned off.

A chapstick,

Even as moments are lived past, there is healing to come to the places where I break.
