My Home
Soca music and Old School Hip Hop
Caribana, Crop Over and Small Farm Reunions
From “Congratulations” to “That’s my baby!”
Two different cultures in my home
Plastic forks, cups and silverware
To prayer circles and a bunch of amen
Aluminum foil keeps the leftovers right
“This is the grown folks table” “Get out of grown folks business”
The “Come on ins” to the “Why’s he bring this girl to dinner” conversations
Kids eat first and the “what you want on your plate” is normal in my home
Collard Greens in the Crockpot
Corn pudding sitting in a pan
That’s one culture in my home
Flip the page and it is wrapped silver spoons and forks
The “What’s this food called” side of me
Raise the flag, the flag we are proud of
Up and down the streets of Toronto we go
Flying Fish, Coscos, Fish Cakes and Rum Cake
The heavy accents and the family stories
Jackets are called blazers and if you wear them inside don’t let Grandpa see
Taking shirts off and Palancing
Whine your hips or die trying side of the family
The international family tree
Barbados, London, Brooklyn, Toronto and Fort Wayne
Duty Free pit stops right at the border
“Thanksgiving in October?!?” side of the family
“Yeah, you know where Rihanna is from”
“Maybe I’ll see her at Crop Over” side of me
Sugar cane, tea every morning, plantain chips side of me
Both sides of me make me great
Why live life with one culture, when you can have two?
