My Identity

My first name is Narly, how cool you think that is. I can accept that my name is not a common name. I won’t change it to something you heard before. What is my name? My name is my Identity. My name is history. History of my haitian roots. My name is my pride. I am every Haitian who fought in the war against the French to gain their freedom. My name is their victory. My name is a symbol. Is a book that catches your attention and you have no choice but to open it. You must not judge it, but I know you will. Yes! Yes! Yes! I’m use to people saying “ gnarly dude!” When I tell them that my name is Narly. Most people think that saying means “cool” but it does not. My name tells where I am from. That I am Haitian. That I love waking up to eating my cultural foods; legume and the black rice. I love my culture, is like a part of me I can’t live without. My name has meaning. It is not gnarly but Narly. It is love. Love for every part of me either you see it or don’t. I am Narly Cange and nobody can define me better than myself.
