My Identity Now

By Kacey King

Born in a country different than what you claim is home

-Not being able to be yourself in the “land of the free”

-Because my household and School are so different from each other

The burgers don’t compare to the chicken foot stew back home

But I pretend it does because my white friends would never understand

-I have been pushed into a wall that is filled with uncertainty and oppression

-the only thing certain is my identity being lost

-Languages my parents have taught me are almost nonexistent

The switch has been created

- I have a switch

Can you believe that? I am a human being with a switch

Approaching my “different” friends differently

Because skin tone has been taught to matter more than a person’s personality

I have learned a new term

People use it to describe me and my multiple personalities

Even though I think I am just me

They call it

Code-switching

The difference between “hi how are you” vs “was good witchu”

It's a crazy concept

It has

Become a part of me and my identity now
