My Life's Careful Calculation

Daily life is full of calculations from the moment of our waking.

We put together formulas for how to act and dress,

and show the world that we are all perfect and hide the mess.

When we talk to our friends, we try to solve for what they're seeking.

The "x's" of our lives to keep them happy, an answer to a test.

Whether or not we know the trends, we study with our best.

From this, the path of my adolescence, I choose to go astray,

For in my life, I choose not to solve problems in this way.

I go on my own, forging the stones, and lay them down each day.

This my life, filled with strife, I live to learn more about the world.

I find new ways to solve for ‘x’ in the equation of life.

Instead of elimination, I choose to use substitution.

In the system of equations that come around,

I strive to find equilibrium abound.

Perfect, though I may not become,

In every way I shall try to be.
