My Life's Inspiration
When I think of what inspires me
I think of the small paper ticket pinned on my board
With the capitalized words “BILLY JOEL” in the center.
When I think of what inspires me
I think of the poster by my bed
Containing a group of young men carrying a wise one in celebration
Three words floating above them, “Dead Poets Society”.
When I think of what inspires me
I think of the old instrument in my living room
Imperfectly perfect, out of tune
But lovely sounds always produced.
When I think of what inspires me
I think of the train whistling outside my window
Always traveling, seeing new sights
Giving others the ability to see them too.
When I think of what inspires me
I think of hearts
Constantly fascinated at the various emotions one can feel at once
One beating organ, keeping people alive, but also can make them want to no longer.
When I think about hearts
I think of how Robin Williams’s felt
How it made him feel happy, comedic, loving, alive
But also dejected.
When I think about hearts, I think of my own
How it makes me feel hopeful, yet doubtful, fulfilled but sometimes empty
But the emotion I feel the most is my curiosity.
When I think about my curiosity
I picture the night sky
Looking up and wondering, are there other worlds out there?
When I think of space
I think about the possibility of another being out there
Like me
Looking at a star, without knowing how much life it contains
That it’s not just another freckle on the sky’s cheeks.
When I think of that other being
I wonder if it feels like I do
Has an object in them that makes them feel, or wonder
If there’s more for them than seemingly provided
When I think of that other being
I wonder if they feel like that talented man did
Full but empty
Everything but nothing.
When I think of possibilities as such,
I think of what inspires me.
Opportunities that are given to me or could be had
People that were everything
But didn’t believe that fact.
When I think of what inspires me
I think of how big the universe is
And how little we know of it.
How life is short, and life-changing opportunities shouldn’t be passed up on
To carry on legacies similar to those that mean a lot to me
I think of the stars in the sky that are more than just stars.
I think of hearts, and how mine is telling me to follow my dreams.
When I think of life itself
I think of inspiration.
