My Marine

I did not know you then, When I demanded that you Remove yourself From MY fishing spot. You gave me a look Of disarmed surprise, Of amusement, And stayed where you were. "Look here now, I've been in this spot For YEARS. So I hope That you don't mind sharing." You smiled at my words. "I don't give up ground easy, ma'am." And as I sat beside you, I asked, "Why?" "I'm a marine." I have seen the bullet wounds, The surgery scars, But it's what I can't see That often worries me. You prefer your silence; Often times you're a recluse In the dark, Hiding yourself from the outside world. I do not understand these things. But I understand love, And I will always fight For my marine.
