My Mystery Girl

Olchise

Olchise, Olchise, Olchise.

I can't get over your name,

The mystery of its origin: neither English nor Haitian,

From where does it come?

You exist in a special corner of my brain- my heart.

I think of you often, your yellow dress, your face, shadowed with grief,

Emotion and life concealed behind the veil of poverty...

From what are you hiding?

I wrote a song about you

The day I learned that our fates were intwined.

"Olchise," I sang,

"Olchise, Olchise, my girl with the mystery name."

I can pluck a few chords on poorly-tuned strings,

But no harmonies will reconcile the brokenness between us.

Olchise, Olchise, Olchise: my mystery girl,

Let us bring joy into each others lives.
