My Name

My name means something. It means everything to me. My name is Latisha. Not Lakeisha. Not Laquisha. Not Latesha. Not Latosha. There's no K, no Q, no E,no O! Letters YOU put in my name to fit a standard not worth keeping... Believing that my name was MADE UP! It's not to fit society's standards but to push the limits beyond their boundaries. My name derives from "Leticia", mines is just a variation. It means "Joyful", which I am majority of the time. Through trials and tribulations, My name STANDS through DEATH and TIME! My name is MINES! So do me a favor... LEARN TO SAY IT RIGHT and DON'T CHANGE IT THIS TIME!

This poem is birth from the experience of my name being pronounce wrong or completely changed by the speaker because of assumption. As a pre-service teacher, it's important for me to make sure I learn my students' names because that is a part of their identity. Your name is the 1st fingerprint you make on the world. It's your mark that you leave when you died besides your children, if you have any.
