My Need
A girl…double major in Marketing and Public Relations with a minor in Spanish
18 years old
doing things for herself
Getting all the grades
but never getting repaid.
What is a need?
When a mother tells her daughter,
“Don’t stay in this city.
You’ll be hurt.
People steal.
There is hate.
You’ll be killed.”
When a father says
“Get all the grades
and be your best…
because people like you
get the jobs,
the two kids,
the white fence
-where you are so rich that it ain’t picket!...but its brick.”
But where’s my fence…?
Where is
my good reputation
after all my tribulation
leading to my ultimate humiliation.
Always getting the grades
but always being played.
Because a girl can’t get any money.
Scholarships didn’t give me any money
-I guess they thought it was funny.-
That I had to take out loans and STILL pay thousands on the side…
…cause of the need…
that a family who makes enough not to receive aid, yet isn’t rich has.
It would be a shame
for me to leave
give up all that I breathe
all of my dreams
my education
determination
salvation
BECAUSE ALL THAT I NEED…
Is a scholarship.
A need is not the same as a want.
Some people want a scholarship.
Well, I’ve got news:
I NEED a scholarship.
The love of money is the root of all evil?
The lack of it is the pretense to destruction.
My need is more grand
than all others in the land
of the undeserving
un-nerving
overcritical
yet intentional
people that tell me
“Jaylon, you don’t have what it takes”
FOR YOUR INFORMATION
I KNOW ENGLISH AND MATH
AND 2 + 2 = 4
AND 4 + ME = CHA-CHING
AND CHA + CHING = BLING BLING…
but bling bling – college equals a backpack and a textbook, and THAT’S my need.
My educational destination because of my situation of “I WANNA BE ALL OF WHO I CAN BE.”…
This 3.93 in highschool won’t be unused
and this 3.83 in college won’t be abused.
So don’t accuse me
when you see
and I say
that I need
mon-ay.
