My Outlook on Poetry
I was never really a great poet; I started writing because I wanted to express something that couldn't have been expressed before with just my music. My words became the spearhead to my expression. Poetry to me is the way we share our ideas the way we truly wanted it to be. Something that normal conversation doesn't come close to expressing. Poetry is a trait of ourselves.
Poetry entered my life, as people started saying I should start singing in the music I make. I was just a young teenager making music that sound like they belong on the NES gaming system. In fact, they did.
So I started slowly working up songs here and there; I wrote one song for my mother before I left for the military. The music was ok, but my voice was really terrible. Strangely enough, back then, people say I had more expression in my voice than I had with my later songs I did, before I started getting singing lessons. Back then I really didn't know what my lyrics was about. I just stood at home all day playing video games. I never really listen to real music before. As I started to continue to write music, I've slowly realized there is real passion and emotion in making poetry.
I've gotten into poetry not in the traditional sense, but through music, I've started listing to the works of Michael Jackson. His expression, his flow, and of course his dance moves is what really got me into poetry. One work in particular "Don't stop till you get enough" really struck me. It gave me motivation to start writing my own lyrics.
I honestly though that writing poetry was never a skill I should've take up. I realized; however, it opens up more doors for me to venture, to express myself. It gave me a reason to make the music that I make. It makes people share their thoughts with me.
Poetry, is something that has expanded many things for me. It allowed me to share my feelings with the rest of the world. It's a very creative form of art that surpass just mere words. I don’t know where I'll be without it.
