My People

I had a dream, that I would become the best Neonatal Nurse Practitioner in the world

That I would save lives --- no matter the struggles I would have to endure to get there.

I would never turn down my services based on someone’s race, ethnicity, gender or culture,

And because of this, I am inspired by those who came before me.

Ms. Mary Eliza Mahoney,

Ms. Mabel Keaton Staupers,

And Ms. Rebecca Lee Crumpler.

They look like me, talk like me.

And when I see their reflection, it matches my complexion.

Today I remember the African American Women that never gave up,

Especially when all odds were against them.

No excuses were made,

And I am constantly encouraged everyday.

By the woman that I aspire to become,

And the reflection that I see in the mirror.

I thank these women for making me realize that my future is clearer.
