My Poetic Arc

7th grade, not the easiest grade,

yet I was happy to have made it through.

Writing words, reading stories,

and one 6-word memoir,

the year was still pretty blue.

9th grade, it came again and I didn’t know what to do.

Once I opened up my heart, I knew my part,

and with encouragement,

I was able to write once more, it’s true!

Now I’m here, no longer living in fear

of what words might come and do,

for I hold the pen and paper too,

I finally knew what I had to do.

Looking inside others’ hearts,

I realized words could tear people apart.

Luckily, I chose to use my newfound power for good,

& as my friends say, “As I should”.

I knew I could, & the rest of the world hoped

I would.
