My Purpose In Life

My Purpose In Life

What is the purpose in life, for a delinquent like me?

Am I to battle with my parents over our cultural diversity?

Their expectations and experiences do not compare to mine,

Because they were born in a different place and era of time.

So I don’t expect them to understand or comprehend what I’ve seen,

Because the murder of my best friend Luis continues to haunt my dreams.

Since that day, every night has been disturbed by my own screams,

And I’m sent back to the moment when his blood had been shed on me.

I was young, in middle school, nothing but thirteen,

But since that day I’ve gotten stronger, just pursuing my dreams.

I aspired to be a doctor, an athlete, or maybe even a rapper,

But my whole life seemed like a bad movie just waiting to be captured.

Three of my friends passed away since then, and my heart was cold,

I lived day to day in agony, hoping my pain would unfold,

And exit my body, through the form of tears or through my soul,

Because losing another friend would be too much for me to withhold.

But then one day, after another day of dragging through school,

I met the girl who gave me hope, and kept my hot-head cool.

It started out as a crush, and then grew into something more each day,

Every moment I spent with her kept all of the sorrow away.

So she became the gem of my world, and I became hers as well,

I never thought I’d see a glimpse of heaven in my world of hell,

And through her, I found courage, strength, incentive, and purpose,

To keep pushing through life and abandon all thoughts that are worthless.

And the complete joy she gave me could never be purchased,

So I drowned pain and agony, and never let it surface.

The mind rules over matter, as I have learned over these years,

And if one believes enough, then he can truly overcome his fears,

And I believe that nothing can stop me or my progression,

My passion, my sorrow, and my love are all important lessons.

So I live and I learn as I mature into a determined young man,

And if I can find a purpose amongst the doubt, then surely you can.

Just a short reflection on one of the hardest, critical stages of my life, but it was a lesson well learned. Life is meaningless without purpose.
