My Rat

I woke up one morn’

Opened my eyes

You darted off

Left traces of blood

On my cot

It came from my bloody left thumb

You bit

I thought you were a nice pet to keep

I did not treat you bad

My food with you I oft’ shared

Maybe the food smelled bad

You were mad

You know I had no choice

My rotten food had to go somewhere

And you happened to be there

With your help

I got one beating less

How can I forget – my rat

For not ratting me out to my mum

Or I’d be dead by now

The scar you left

Is now a memory

To others I share our story
