On My Shoulder
There’s a demon that sits perched upon my shoulder.
He doesnt show himself always,
But in the silence of the night he will whisper in my ear.
High and mighty I stand until the winds of his breath push me away from my center.
Then I get stuck, caught in a whirlwind of ideas and desires that don’t serve my highest good.
I try to shut him down.
Shut him up,
Quiet it all.
But his whisper is like a magnet and it pulls me.
Pulls me
Pulls me
Pullls me away from my center,
Pulls me towards the shadows of my mind
Pulls me towards desires of the flesh that don’t serve the higher good I wish to serve.
There’s a demon named desire, and he comes at me when I least expect it.
He comes at me when the winds of life bare down on me real hard and my will-power is just a tidbit lower.
There’s a demon named desire and I’ve tried to pretend he isn’t there.
But today I met him.
I spoke to him.
I asked him, “What is it you desire, desire?”
And he told me.
He told me he wants more.
And I realized that this demon named desire has been quietly pulling the strings of my life for a long time now.
Pulling me towards more, more, more.
I asked him, “what happens when you get more?, When is it enough?”
And his answer was a long, soft word of “more”.
Til no end he fights, and continues ushering onwards,
But today I met him in the flesh and I began to see out yonder
I saw him as a demon, and I saw him as a saint.
I saw him as the condition that I was born with.
I saw him as my guiding force.
For good or bad, his desires drive me forwards.
In the shadows he rules me,
Sneakily, subconsciously,
But in the light he speaks to me
And identifies himself to me.
His demonic red shifts and morphs into some angelic blue
What is it all for?
This desire for more?
This desire for the next and next and next?
What is it all for?
How is the now?
Here and now?
Today he seeks more
And I ask him what for
And he laughs a laugh
A ceremonious laugh
And winks at me
And I wink back.
