My Three Year Anniversary

Today is my three year anniversary. What can I say? When you make it through one year, You feel like your love can conquer the world; Like nothing, not even time, can stand in your way. A year and a half brings hurdles you never knew you could jump, And once you’ve made it over the biggest hump, There are no mountains too high for your love to fly Over and over; you could love on forever. Two years come and go; you think: Well, that was easy. …year three. You take each day as it comes. Some days slide by, others punch you right in the throat. Some days make you want to throw up, throw down With the first person who crosses you, Especially that one you love the most. Most days are fine, but it feels like most days are hard to come by. Most days you love like you always have, You give and you take, but mostly you give, And you feel like you’re not getting anything back. How can both sides give so much, and both sides get so little? Where is the in-between space no one knows about, The place where all the love goes? Two and a half. Has it really been this long? The same face every morning, the same voice on the phone. It sounds so familiar, but so strange sometimes. Two years. Nine months. He takes you out. You love each other. He holds you. Oh yeah, that’s why I’m here, been here for so long. Why would I go somewhere else? And that brings me to today. September 6th, 2012. Three years. I try to fit three years on two pages, but I’m running out of room. I try to explain why, After all the trial and error The long months The stupid fights The not knowing why, or how, or what this is. Does anyone ever really understand? How can you, after only three years? I’ve been with you since my Freshman year of college. Are you crazy?, they ask me, Why didn’t you just live your life? THE REAL COLLEGE EXPERIENCE. And what do I say? The real college experience was just that: The trial and error The long months The stupid fights The not knowing why, or how, or what this is. And will anyone ever really understand? How it was you. It was always you. I wouldn’t have made it through. And as my words spill onto page three, Struggling to get out, to interpret, to make sense, to make understand… I stop. Because there’s nothing left to say. At least not for today. Our love will write more tomorrow, the next day, and all the days That I will keep on loving you Defying time Jumping mountains Conquering the world.

I wouldn't have made it through my undergraduate career without the love of my life. Everyone says I missed out on the "real college experience," but I feel like they're the ones who missed out.
