To My Uncle In Jail

Dear David,

Uncle David,

It’s been six years since the last time I saw you in person.

Five days since I spoke to you on the phone.

Even though we talk, what seems like every day

It doesn’t stop the fact that you are miles and miles away

Or the fact that 5 minutes into each call there’s an automated voice saying:

“Your calls are monitored for your safety,”

Or when we talk too long:

“You only have one minute left on your call.”

My sister says hi,

She doesn’t really know you.

I’m graduating soon,

This year actually.

You said you’d be there for my graduation.

Guess not.

College graduation is only 4 years away though.

So maybe you’ll be there for that one.

Probably not.

I don’t mean to sound like a jerk,

I just really wish you were here.

You give the best advice, and you’re one of my best friends, and it’s like I’m actually being heard when I talk to you.

Plus you have all the dirt on my mom from when she was younger, so that’s a plus.

I guess I’ll talk to you later.

I love you.
