My Wallet Tells Me, “No.”

Dear Wallet,

Last night, I doze off anticipating that my dreams would carry me away,
Hoping that the financial problems, the worries and the struggles wouldn’t want to stay.
“Oh, the places you’ll go!” they say,
But how can I go when all you do is tell me, “No.”

My adult life is finally starting;
I want to see more,
But everyone around me is so worried about my departing,
And I’m kind of poor.

I love what I’ve got here,
And that is sincere,
But sometimes I wish I could just hit “clear,”
Pack up my things and run away with no fear.

I dream of eating spaghetti in Verona,
Then speaking Spanish in Barcelona.
I dream of sticking my toes in the tropical sand,
And doing research in Thailand.

As I dream about becoming a foreigner,
My parents’ dreams about in-state tuition and loans come creeping around the corner.
