Necessary Lies
People are complex
In their ability to inflict pain -
To look funny at you -
Or catch you off guard -
They can sense if you are different -
If you are original -
Un-programmed -
Especially if you dress like me -
And act like me -
Right now I am relatively safe -
But I have already been busted four times -
It can't happen again -
I must blend in -
To this mechanized, mundane, modern world -
I must keep it all hid -
Comb my hair -
Wash my clothes -
Finish school -
Get a job -
Stop philosophizing -
So there isn't a Witch Hunt -
Simply on the strength of suspicion -
An awkward smile -
Or an unwanted glance -
I can't allow any of these things -
I must be perfect -
I can't make a singe mistake -
For the rest of my life -
