Necessity

If my life was confined to one pursuit

If I had no ambitions but one

I would find comfort in a single thing

A single solace in an otherwise empty existence

Music would put my heart at ease

Soothe my troubled soul

Fill every broken part

Of a crumbling edifice

Worn away from years of wind and rain

I would cling to every cadence

Like a desperate beggar pleading

For one more crust of bread

To feed her starving child

I would wrap myself in symphonies

To battle the cold of night

My fears would be made weightless

Floating into oblivion

As I hummed a tune in passing

I would be content to live

With nothing else but this.
