Necklace

Your car moved across the gravel

And the noise was like

Soldiers’ swords in battle-

Like the tears fighting

To slow down so

I could breathe or see

More than the blur

Of your tail lights

Moving away.

And I held the necklace

In my fingers and

Unclasped the back

But I didn’t know what

To do with it then because

Before, I never took it off.
