Nelson from the University of St. Thomas

The name’s Nelson, many call me Mandela

The guy with the nice face, he’s a handsome fella

Becoming the first in the family was pretty great

Many didn’t even think I would graduate

But the difference is that I’m a fighter

Working hard every day so my future looks brighter

And now I’m a college student

Boy from a small town, who would’ve ever knew it

So many new faces all around me

I look for something familiar, but I can’t see

I’m lost for a second, but then I look above

God’s always watching, I’ve always got his love

Now I know I’m not alone in this place

Just got to look at the wall and there’s his face

Here, UST embodies faith and reason

And I’m slowly beginning to understand its meaning

We’re not just searching for pure academic logic

We’re trying to figure out who we are; someone symbolic

The school also emphasizes liberal arts

From music to theatre, UST is here to steal your hearts

But grades in college are a must

Can’t have my books covered in all that dust

A’s will be my middle name

Sounds kind of lame, but you know I won’t be the same

Different is respected here

Diversity everywhere, far and near

It hasn’t even been a year

And I can already see my future getting clear

I’ve been learning new things every day

I’m an introvert and I decide with feelings, what can I say

God made me this way, and I’m so blessed

The whole school has me feeling really well, I must confess

What seemed like a dream in the past

Is before my eyes

Life is moving pretty fast

And I’m reaching for the sky

Went to major fair on a Thursday after class

Talked to this lady who helped me decide my path

I was indecisive over whether to pick biology or chemistry

But after a couple of minutes I knew bio was my destiny

Biology major is what I am

Have to study all day and all night, I don’t got room to cram

I hurt my back while playing soccer four years ago

Didn’t think I’d recover, but here I am busting that flow

Took me six months to recover from my injury

Four days a week during the whole summer I had to go to therapy

The people that helped me were so kind

They influenced me, and I made up my mind

I want to be a physical therapist and help out the community

Giving back to the people, that’s my responsibility

With the education and core values of UST

I’m getting more than I thought I would

This place is becoming special to me

And I’d stay here longer if I could

This is Nelson signing out

Now y’all know what I’m all about

Keep it real 24/7

Let me know how it goes and I’ll see y’all in heaven
