Never and Forever

People speak of never and forever like they're OH so far away

Like they exist solely in a land where once upon a time is the norm

And knights in shining armor whisk the damsel in distress away to their happily every after every day

But never and forever are closer than you think

Turn around

Close your eyes

Take 10 steps back

And forever is on your left

Reach out your hand and you'll touch it

It's hard to grasp yet easy to hold

It sends electricity into your lungs

And overcharges your heart

Leaving your skin cold

Causing every atom in you to violently vibrate silently

Forcing you to react

Because you hold forever in your hands

But all you see is black

And curiosity gets the best of you

So you slowly pull back your eyelids

Only to be surprised when

You find Forever staring at your back

Because forever and never are closer than you think

you close your eyes again

And feel forever's gaze upon your skin

You pray that this moment never ends

So you squeeze forever tighter than you ever have

 it grips you back

As if it's answering your prayers to never let never interfere with you and it's happily ever after

Until forever starts galloping away

And anxious not to let forever

 slip..slip...slip away

You follow forever forgetting that you don't know where forever is taking you

As you feel the wind swallowing your face

The earth transform under your soles

And a new form of freedom as forever frisks you away to a place you'd never thought you go

Until forever stops

You feel cracks in the ground beneath your toes

And tsunamis of heat splash against your face

Every hair on your body stands to attention

As the back of your neck sends shivers down your spine

And as your stomach grinds

Forever whispers to you "Goodbye"

Then Your chest begins to heave

As your fingertips slide down forever's palms

Phalanges frantically searching for a place to call home

But finding nothing but cold words etched in stone

Fingers falling from forever's grip

Now finding nothing but false promises and fallen hopes

(Slow down here)

As water from your irises caresses your cheeks

Your heart feeling the absence of forever's fingers

Every pore mourning the lack of forever's lips

The lips that caused the well of air in your lungs to burst

Through the cracks and crevices of pain and past memories

Healing all of the scars from your enemies

But now that well runs dry

That well of air in your lungs

That put you on cloud nine

Has now been stolen

Snatched from your esophagus

Dragged from your mouth

And up into the air

As you realize that forever is gone

And Never has taken its place

With its hand in your back

Trying to help your forget forever's face

And as Never tells you that it'll be with your forever

Now it's become a cycle of forever never being there and never being there forever

As you cry on Never's shoulder

Hoping that at least never would stay with you forever

But thinking that, that'd never happen

Until never whispers in your ear

Not to be so quick to jump to careless conclusions

Because never isn't always forever
