Never Came Home
She knew who to run to every night
when the fear ran stale
and the pain took flight
he was there always there
he put his hand beside her head
"Darlin, everything's alright"
so he said
9 months
and then a new life came
he held her hand through all the pain
he said he'd never leave her side
but then,
he found a new life dream
so he forgot the one they shared
now every single night she cries
"How do I raise this baby right?"
so she said
but the baby went away
and was raised in a better place
still she knew
I always just knew
well year one
I didn't know your name
or who you were or where you'd gone
this went on for many years
year 10
I started askin' things
bout who you'd been
and why all the pictures say you were there back then
'cause you ran with the fear
and flew with the pain
you were gone before I knew what to say
you left 13
you're still not around
I get these questions by the day
like "Where's your normal family?"
I guess I'll never really know
16
I guess I'm happy now
but part of me still wonders why
the most you've ever said was hi
now I've seen your face
and your brand new family
and just this how
how did I get left behind
there are many years to come
I guess you'll be here for none
but I don't really need to ask you why
it's 'cause you ran with the fear
and flew with the pain
you were gone before I knew what to say
you left
I got a family that I love
in return for the choice you made
they're my forever
the ones that didn't
run with the fear
or fly with the pain
they were there when I didn't know what to say
they stayed
while you ran with the fear
and flew with the pain
you were gone before I knew what to say
you left
so now my path has gone and changed
and made a soldier along the way
the gun, my mouth
the ammo, my words
I've fought this long without you here
and this fighting gave me voice
now all thats left to finally say
is the goodbye that you took from me
now I have my own words too
and in the end I was your loss too
