Never Me

How is it that I can be surrounded by a thousand happy things, But none of them myself? For I can ride my bike through a happy breeze Through a happy park, And hear the children run and play Accompanied by a happy dog's bark, I can watch a father and son Practice summer ball In the winter air Without a care at all, And I can sit and enjoy A brilliant and beautiful sunset, Yet somehow after all the colors I still have some regret. And I will not deny that I am at peace In a fresh fallen snow, But soon the pale blanket will melt And that content feeling seems to follow. What's more I can gaze at the friendly moon Until the bitter end of time, But no smile, wish, or hello I give Ever makes him a friend of mine. And I can look at the stars laughing in the night Watching as they dance and twirl Across the milky ballroom floor But to join, oh they never ask this lonely girl. And I can whistle to the birds Until I run out of breath, But they never share their words Or their songs with me, And as much as I enjoy the opera of the frogs Never will they sing when I’m near For I suppose that my monstrous self Causes their little beings fear. 1-12-16
