Never Met You
I’m sorry that I never met you
When I saw you on that crowded bus
You were just another faceless life form
A speck in a cloud of dust
I’m sorry that I never met you
When I dropped some coins at your feet
On the corner you sat begging
Trying to make ends meet
I’m sorry that I never met you
When you held the elevator door for me
Scooting into the back corner
I stood there quietly
I’m sorry that I never met you
Soldier in the airport terminal
Your family looked overjoyed to see you
And I think that says it all
I’m sorry that I never met you
The grave with my last name
It reads “beloved father”
I wish I could say the same.
I’m glad I never knew you.
