Never Return Home

In the fusion of dark and light
Before the sun shines bright
Dark fades with the sun’s presence
And the door of fate shines bright
Transcendent

And yet there’s a certain tranquility of the morning
That cannot be overcome by the watchmen’s warning
The pounding of feet as we scramble to wake
That certain feeling that we cannot shake

I’ve been there before
And we’ll see it again
Hundreds of men
Hundreds of their friends

Who will never return home.

On the field, no time to mourn
We must do the duty for which we have sworn
We wait for the call
We wait for the fall
Of those who stand with medals adorned

We do not pretend
That we can transcend
The pain we feel
The ache is real
To say goodbye to our good friends

As we race forward to face the foe
And we quietly wait for the very first blow
We protect each other
Because we know

We may never return home.
