Never Taken for Granted

Fingertips graze my cheekbone

Accompanied by the smell of flower petals

And nail polish

She grasps, saved by nimble touch

And I can’t control the way my irises glow

When she pinches my face

Two sapphires swaddled by rosy cheeks

A smile that shines brighter than crystal

“You had an eyelash on your face”

As she leans, cradled against me

Shoulder to shoulder

Poised, sitting next to me

She holds up my eyelash

She holds up my heart

“Hey”

“Make a wish”

Eyelashes are wishes

Faint feathers of heaven

Falling down out of the windows to the soul

So I close my eyes and blow the eyelash

Off of her fingertips

Back up into heaven

“How did you make a wish so quickly?”

When I’m with her

All of my wishes have been granted

Not by eyelashes or magic

But by the angel leaning on me

Her dark blonde halo is crooked

As it cascades from her head to my shoulder

I’m lucky I’m falling for you

And so thankful for every moment

When I’m with her

The only thing taken for granted

Are all of my wishes.
