New Beginning

A soft thump is heard.

The fawn

 still covered in afterbirth

 opens its eyes.

The doe lays exhausted

Yet still alert

Her ever watchful eyes

Tuned to the song of the forest

And any deviations in its melody

That warns of death.

The fawn carefully struggles to her feet

And falls.

The doe nudges her,

You must get up my love.

A failed attempt to make sense of this new world

Concentrate my love

Because a failure to stand

A failure to walk

A failure to run

Will kill you.

You can do it my love

The fawn jerks and lifts her front legs up

Back legs follow

And this time she is successful.

I always knew you could

The fawn slowly walks to her doe

And begins to suckle

While the doe licks her clean.

I love you.
