New Beginnings

All the harsh words and memories echo in my mind

It seems every relationship I tend to find

Always ends in guilt and my struggling to keep their attention

But I lie about the details to put off an intervention

And I sit here today, scared to connect

I associate emotional intimacy with poison

Because the first compliments and laughs are what grab ahold

So that I ignore the other lies and letdowns I'm told

But now I've met someone who I think is healthy

He doesn't put down my interests and it confuses me

He hasn't called my passions worthless, I don't understand

He hasn't employed intimidation in order to have the upper hand

And this boy in front of me cares about my feelings and worries?

Instead of using support as justificiation for why he can push my boundaries?

And when I talk to him now, I do with a natural ease

Instead of thinking about his ability to physically hurt me

Today I have to make a decision that can potentially change everything

Because although my past has been manipulative and damaging

I have to let my heart continue its strengthening and mending

Today, I won't let my past stop me from a happy ending.
