New Chapters Start by Letting Go
College really taught me that who you are and who you want to be are two different people
If you really want it your way its time to let go of the things you loved the most
But it isn’t always easy to learn to let go
Especially when that thing you love the most
Are the very people who watched you grow
The time has come for me not to glow up, but to show up as well
To make my Mark and a name for myself
Even when the world pushes at me and causes me to fall
My parents always told me to give it my all
But they aren’t here now …
are they?
“This is your time to shine” they say
So why is it that I’m still in the dark
It’s time for me to pave my own path
So let me just light a match, watch it burn…
Oh wait here’s my spark
Forging the way for a new generation
Solving the problems, I never could before
Only realizing that help comes limited now
Slowly fading in forgotten lore
But is it ever really gone?
Freedom always comes with a price
You may just have to give some up to acquire it
What you knew before is still there
But what lies ahead is better beyond compare
Even when I left them
They never doubted me for a second
Believing that I could achieve all that I set my mind to
Never distancing myself from wanting to know the truth
In the end they’re still with me
Only now it’s time for me to call the shots
Because as you get older you realize
That you got to learn to be an adult
And that…
Oh wait I forgot.
Could you help me?
That you can’t always expect people to hold your hand for you
Think my own thoughts
No one is going to do the work for me
I am in control of my own destiny
For success is coming in a oh so sweet melody
I packed my bags and I moved out
Why is it that I still have so much doubt?
Get over it I tell myself
Do you really one day want to sleep on your parent’s couch
No… you don’t
So grow up…
Be a man
And make your parents proud…
Because they already are!
