New Life

You can never surmise to get another day

Or assume to live as long as one may dream

This is a topic often forgotten, not thought about

Yet, it's one of the most important it seems

Some statements will make your stomach drop

There are three words that come to my mind

And they haunt me everyday

These three words are hard to think about

And, even come out and say

"You have cancer"

The best description of my emotions

For this unbearable moment of time

Was to realize there is something that had to be defeated

In addition, there is a road and a mountain to climb

Although, for some families the news is too overpowering

Feeling, as though, the battle is already lost

But, feeling this way does not show support to the afflicted

And if not supported, their life will be the cost

There are three steps to pass while living with this monster

And, these steps are listed below

Living With, Living Through, and Living Beyond

And, the entire process is painfully slow

The Living With describes diagnosis, then treatment

Such as surgery, chemo, or radiation

The Living Through refers to the emotional side of things

Which mainly is fear and frustration

Living Beyond refers to survivorship

Learning to appreciate each day as it may arrive

Feeling as if you graduated from a malignant roller coaster

Waking up each morning, never feeling more alive

Sadly enough, some people don't Live Beyond

Then, a long while after, fall back into the climb

Unfortunately once received back

There usually isn't much time

There are three more words in this process

That will make your time shockingly stand still

"I'm so sorry" ...coming from the doctor

There is no description for this unforgettable chill

So, there is that defeated feeling once more

Some feel that the disease has won

But, there's more to each scenario

Than the physical body being gone

Here is why...

When i heard I lost my godmother, Diane

I was just a child, nearly six

I was old enough to understand she was gone

And I felt like I was hit with a brick

Then, I closely thought about the situation

About the strength that she had each day

She pushed every hour and never once complained

She touched anyone's heart who came her way

It is more than just a death

Positively, you see something more

The strength some people can never fathom

That strength can help people open a new door

A door to a New Life that can help push past problems

To help to see life as a gift, not a given

To help people push past strain, sorrow, and stress

That strength people desire to be more driven

My advice is, if you lose someone to cancer

Don't lose hope, they would want you to keep going

Just like they did, each moment of their lives
