The New World

Stormy seas, impending doom

Used to stand between me and you

Empty bottles, broken bones

was all I had to call my own

A hand reached out and I gripped tight

With all I had to save my life

I'm finally here the shore's in view

I've cheated death, though no one knew

I now reach out a hand of hope

To those who'd die before they cope

Now we stand looking out to sea

Waiting for you to meet destiny

This poem is about overcoming addiction. Many who are not affliction with alcoholism or drug addiction do not know about the disease perspective which helps alcoholics and drug addicts to recognize how they react differently to alcohol and drugs than other people. Many of us believe it is an allergy which is defined as an abnormal reaction to a substance. Some people are allergic to strawberries, they puff up and have to go to the hospital if they consume them. (They also tend to avoid strawberries.) In an alcoholic, the abnormal reaction is that when we drink we crave more. There is a stigma for alcoholics and addicts that we can never recover and hardly ever amount to anything. This stigma is wrong.

I was under the lash of alcoholism for roughly 7 years, and got sober at age 22. I acheived my GED and enrolled in our community college where I decided I wanted to teach birth-6 grade. I'm preparing to transfer in the spring to a private 4 year school to acheive my Bachelors Degree in early childhood education with an elementary extension.

Many other people have struggles before finding out where they belong in this world, for me it was alcoholism. I hope that other people may identify with the poem "The New World" with a number of struggles before finding their niche. But remember that the struggles of an alcoholic or addict are just as real as any. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to share this piece with the world as it is close to my heart and truly acknowledges my past as well as my future. Alcoholics and addicts do well together in a recovery setting, it is part of my life now to reach out to others who have suffered from alcoholism and drug addiction. Though I have a new life in Education and am excited for my future, I still have alcoholism and am subject to fall back into the bottle as any alcoholic is. Thank you for taking the time to investigate more about my poem.
