Prose Poem
All I need is my memory. I was well and alive within the crowd full of people. Breaths and screams of the equally excited resonated throughout the blocks of the city that never sleeps. Breath-taking buildings seemed to be reaching for the stars as the day came to an end. As the buildings reached, the stars hung low, but not low enough. Accompanied by the bursts of colorful lights given off by the decorative buildings, the stars illuminated the city at large. As we all stood, crammed and squirming like canned sardines, we all glared ahead. We all stared at the television that narrated our doings to the rest of the nation. Countless times we were asked by these narrators to join in on the discussion via social media. It was quite obvious that the characters being narrated longed for more than admission into a discussion. These characters were hopeful for the spotlight, searching for something worthy to display, to shine on them. Every now and then we were interrupted by the yells and screams of the local business owners. As past observers, they took advantage of the annual event to fatten their wallets. Every noise possible was present. At every turn of the head, a different conversation flooded my ears and drowned out the one prior. Conversation after conversation it continued until every noise came into harmony with one another. 30.. 29.. 28.., it began. Every character had joined in on the countdown. 15.. 14.. 13.. 12.. With every dropping number, the suspense reached a new high. 8.. 7.. 6.. 5.. hundreds upon thousands of hands shot up to the skies. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1 complete havoc.
