New Year

This is a poem in Urdu written by my father, Zia Fatehabadi, long long ago; I am sharing it with you freely translated into English.

  • Ravinder Kumar Soni
  • Wishing you all a very happy new year

                          New Year

People say the year has ended – (that) the period of grief and anger has ended

The invitation for enjoyment has arrived – the matchless new happiness has arrived

The air is filled with the echoes of songs – the flowers and the stars are swaying

The entire Creation is smiling – the entire Creation is brightly shining

But how should I believe (these things are true)

Even now my heart is restless – Even now my eyes are filled with tears

The same unchanged nights belong to me – (filled with) the tales of sadness and separation

If you were to come (to me) tonight – (and) spread in the sky as does a cloud

(And) brighten me with your splendour – fill my heart with new expectations

Only then would I know the new year has arrived.
