The Night Without Streetlights

            Crawling up my skin,

Welcomed goosebumps kiss my arms like butterflies.

Feeling the cold dance around me in the darkness,

            I look up,

            Scared to close my eyes.

What if I miss a moment?

What I once took for granted,

            What I never noticed before,

            Now lay before me,

Staring at me, asking me, how could you miss me?

Though I just want to rest my eyes,

I keep them wide open and take it all in.

Every inch of endless black, like an ocean where wrecked ships sparkle,

            Lost in its infinite beauty,

Maybe, like me, they do not mind that they are wrecked.

            I had forgotten the feeling,

I had forgotten how to look up,

Because no matter how lost I felt,

There was a whole world above me,

A whole world that all of us, bustling below, miss.

But, taking just a moment to lie down,

Letting the vast star-kissed sky overwhelm me,

Ignoring all the spinning around me,

            I felt found.

In the un-littered night sky, I rediscovered the part of me,

The part of me that had fallen asleep,

Waiting to be reawakened by the moon,

Whom I swear, as I laid there in the silence,

Whispered to me the answers I had sought,

Gave me the life I’d lost.

No longer did I wish to rest,

Instead, I begged the moon to stay seated in her throne,

And wished that the stars would never end their dance.

Though at times I still forget,

Of the power that the night has,

            Pure and untouched by man,

            To awaken words and dreams,

That my tired soul had laid to rest.
