Nightlights and Shadows

He stared at the shadows
And trembled in fear
And called for his Mother
Who was hovering near
She pulled him into her warm embrace
And kissed the tears away form his face
His father sighed, and shook his head
"Son, there's no such thing as monsters," he said.

From the closet there came
A snifiling noise
As a scared little creature
Hugged his toys.
His mother tucked him safe into bed
And kissed the top of his furry head
His father bared fangs in a goofy grin
And laughed, "There's no such thing as children of men."
